Understanding Charcoal Specs: Ash, Moisture & Calorific Value

A charcoal spec sheet can look like a wall of numbers. Here are the three that matter most, and what good values look like for premium coconut charcoal.

Calorific value (heat)

Measured in kcal/kg, this tells you how much heat the charcoal produces. Premium coconut briquettes exceed 7,000 kcal/kg, meaning hotter, longer-lasting sessions.

Ash content

Lower is better. Premium coconut charcoal sits around 2.0 to 2.5%, leaving clean white/silver ash. High ash means more residue and a lower-quality experience.

Moisture content

Kept below 5 to 8%, low moisture ensures the briquettes light quickly and burn efficiently. Excess moisture reduces heat and can cause smoke.

Always ask for a recent, independent lab report, not just a spec sheet. Numbers on paper should match tested reality.
